City Police officer behind bars
A suspended Windhoek City Police Constable broke into the Police’s control room in the city on Friday evening and stole a loaded pistol from the safe. Desmond Kurtz, 38, yesterday appeared in the Windhoek Magistrate on charges of robbery and trespassing.
Kurtz allegedly wore a balaclava and held the female officer on duty at knifepoint.
According to Deputy Commissioner Sylvanus Nghishidimbwa, Khomas Region Crime Investigation Coordinator, Kurtz attacked the officer but she managed to escape. Kurtz then got hold of the key to the safe and removed the pistol. The firearm Kurtz stole was loaded with 15 rounds ammunition. He also took an extra 31 rounds. Kurtz then hitch-hiked to Rehoboth, were he was staying.
He was arrested there shortly after. Kurtz allegedly said he took the firearm because he wanted to commit suicide. Yesterday the Court heard that Kurtz has an internal disciplinary hearing pending at his place of work. Kurtz has been suspended for about three months from the City Police. According to City Police Deputy Chief Gerry Shikesho it is an internal matter. He did not elaborate when contacted for comment yesterday. Kurtz also informed the Court that he will appoint a private lawyer.
Public prosecutor Taodago Gaweseb said Kurtz will remain in custody and bail was not recommended. Gaweseb also said Kurtz is suicidal. It was suggested that the accused be referred to a psychologist and obtain a report. It will then be considered whether bail should be granted or not. The case was postponed to March 20 for further investigation and legal representation. Magistrate Justine Asino presided.
