ABETH NICCO VAN ROOI Corporal punishment is not allowed and it is against the law. It will bring fear between the teacher and learner. It will also cause hatred between the teacher and the learner’s family and this will grow within the child.

ANJA DE WET Yes, some parents don’t discipline their children at home and it is usually those children that are a problem at school. Corporal punishment worked in the old days.

ALBERT MUREKO Yes, corporal punishment should be brought back. During our time we were punished and we did well at schools. If parents are not happy with corporal punishment, then the school must suspend the learner from school if they misbehave.

BEN BOYS The fundamental law of the country does not allow us to beat learners. Corporal punishment violates the right to dignity, humiliates the learners. It creates fear within them. How will they learn if they are in a situation like that?

KAY WENTWORTH I don’t agree with corporal punishment because we are dealing with a new generation of the 21st century. These children need discipline in a different form, for example taking away their privileges. Discipline starts at home and we cannot expect teachers to discipline learners.

BENJAMIN AMADHILA It’s not good because if teacher beats a learner, the learner will abscond classes and hate the teacher and in the end they will fail. If the learner is misbehaving he /she must be punished by cleaning toilets, classrooms and watering plants as punishment.

CORNEELS JAFTA I am not a supporter of corporal punishment. Corporal punishment is inflicting pain and is no longer seen as a moral way of discipline. If a parent does it until a certain age, it can work. I am against a second or third person doing it.

LAMEEZ DE KLERK Yes, because there was corporal punishment in the old days and also a lot of discipline. It should be brought back but not heavy punishment. Teachers must only use a cane and not other objects like throw dusters or use verbal use towards the learners.

MARCELLO SCOTT Not at all, learners will grow up with a mentality that violence is the only way to solve problems. Beating is not a solution, schools must find other means to discipline learners like taking away their privileges. Corporal punishement will just increase violence in our country.

NATALIA GOAGOSES I don’t see corporal punishment coming back- not under the current violent incidents we are experiencing. We don’t want to encourage this kind of punishment within our children. There are alternatives to discipline. It’s a matter of counselling and talking to learners.

SALOM IIPINGE The more you exercise corporal punishment, the more the learners will repeat the same mistakes. Teachers must instead counsel learners who are ill-discipline.

SIMONE MAARTENS Yes, because no other punishment seems to discipline the learners, for example detention and taking away learners privileges or sending them home does not help. At least the principal should be the one allowed to beat the learners and not the teachers.
Poor performance of learners and a high rate of indiscipline in schools have had many to ponder if the re-introduction of corporal punishment could be the answer. Namibian Sun put this question to the public to gauge their opinion, and garnered the following responses;
