NAMIBIA LACKS A COMPETITIVE EDGE
Competitveness in the international arena is vital for sporting nations and Namibia as a developing country, has virtually made no breakthrough in that regard. There was little to celebrate about on the international arena except the medals from swimmers and track athletes here and there this year, while the national rugby side heavily exposed the lack of depth, class, skill and a comprehensive robust approach in this domain at the World Cup.
At least they went that far, a plus point for them. Professional boxers fought regionally, bringing out the best only that far, while the Brave Warriors (national football team) had chances against foreign opposition from the continent. A marginal improvement in performance, but stronger opponents is a must to sharpen skills and to keep the side wide awake in terms of being physical, tactical and technical preparedness.
That said, it leaves very little to be proud of as most Namibian sports people over the years hardly faced any strong competition despite having the elite level tag. But the continued lack of facing the best in the world, leaves the country far behind to consistently hone its competitive edge. That has shown in our results years on end. Funds are scares in general, but it gets even worse when there are poor performing teams and athletes and in some cases, not even worth competing, let alone taking part. Namibia as a whole -the Government, corporate world, ardent fans and the general public must re-look their interest in sport. Are we really serious about this thing called sports?
Does Government intend to keep throwing the little fi nancial resources they have into bottomless pits? Do sportsmen and women really feel proud when they return from these competitions with their heads down? Until when will the sporting o_ cials talk the talk without any action? Namibia need visionary, dynamic and courageous individuals who can fi nd ways to source funding, transform sports as a whole and produce world beaters. The dead woods who run some of these codes must admit that they have failed and must walk away with their pride still intact.
