Founded by Magdalena Marius, affectionately known as Maggy, a seasoned Hospitality and Tourism graduate, the restaurant reflects her decade-long career in the hospitality industry. After eight years of hands-on experience, Maggy travelled to Johannesburg, South Africa, for specialised sushi chef training, honing her skills to perfection and earning recognition and awards that fuelled her passion to bring sushi excellence to Windhoek.“Here, creating sushi is more than just preparing food – it’s an art,” says Maggy. “Each dish tells a story, and we pride ourselves on using the freshest ingredients to ensure every bite delights our customers.” From Norwegian salmon and fresh tuna to crisp prawns and creamy avocado, every element is carefully selected to maintain the highest quality. “Freshness is our priority, and it’s what sets us apart,” she adds. The menu balances tradition and innovation. Patrons can enjoy classic sushi such as California Rolls, Nigiri, and Sashimi, or indulge in Maggy’s signature creations. The Sushi Hotdog, for example, is a playful fusion of fried rolls, tuna, salmon, avocado, cucumber, sriracha mayo, teriyaki sauce, sesameseeds, and seven-spice seasoning. Other favourites include the family platter, tempura selections, and a sushi combo featuring prawns, salmon, and tuna crowned with teriyaki sauce.Beyond its delectable menu, Maggy’s Sushi Bar is a hub of creativity and community engagement. The restaurant hosts monthly Poetry Sushi Nights, allowing customers to showcase their talent while enjoying Japanese cuisine in a warm, welcoming environment. Opening her business was no easy feat. “Launching Maggy’s Sushi Bar was like going to war,” she reflects. “It required immense effort, financial investment, time, and trust.
