Onkoshi: The beauty of the pan

Onkoshi Camp is located on the edge of the pan in the Etosha National Park. A small resort located in an extremely beautiful part of the park, it offers only 15 units with 30 beds and guarantees a genuinely personal experience.

The camp offers superb views of the pan, which has shimmering mirages which look like a river during hot days.

All rooms are on elevated wooden decks, with thatched roofs and canvas walls – I suppose to keep the animals away.

You are bound, however, to still encounter a gecko or two. Acceptable, I suppose, as it is their habitat.

I spent two nights at Onkoshi recently with my partner. The road there is not too bad, but it is advisable to use a reliable 4x4 if you want to travel. But a sedan, also known as a ‘small car’, can also do the trick, just drive slowly.

The room we spent our weekend in was beautiful - it was clean, cool and overlooked the pan. This means I could lay in bed and watch the sunset with no cares in the world.

The outside shower is very private. This was ideal, the perfect way to be one with nature. The massive glass doors facing the pan open to cool the room as well.

The scenery from the balcony was amazing, and we woke to the sounds of birds chirping in the morning – a welcome reprieve from the buzz of the city we are so used to.

Stunning sundowners

The staff at Onkoshi were very welcoming and offered great service. The viewing deck for sundowners was simply amazing, and we enjoyed the food, but there wasn’t much variety.

During our time there, we did an afternoon game drive. There were many signs of animals, and we got to see a leopard, a very rare sight according to our guide.

We also saw a mother elephant with her two calves, zebras, oryx and ostriches. We would, however, have loved to see more elephants as that was the point of travelling to Onkoshi.

But that’s nobody’s fault – it’s always the luck of the draw and this did not take away from our experience.

The lodge has a swimming pool, but it was closed due to renovations. There were actually a lot of renovations being done around the camp, and it would have been nice to have this information before we made our booking.

Overall, I’d have to give Onkoshi three stars out of five for the beautiful location and experience we had.

I would go back one day – perhaps in the rainy season when it’s green. I would recommend Onkoshi, just don’t expect a luxurious fine dining experience. Travel if you long for a road trip and some time in nature.
