Police and bailiffs dismantled Occupy London's campsite outside St. Paul's Cathedral early Tuesday, clearing one of the longest-surviving encampments inspired by the New York protest against capitalist excess.
The protesters said vans loaded with police arrived at the site just before midnight.
The local authority, the City of London Corporation, confirmed the eviction was under way by bailiffs, backed by police.
"We regret that it has come to this," the corporation said in a statement, asking protesters to move on peacefully. Read more about UK Occupy protest ends

After days of predicting that he would win a third term with a crushing majority, Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade on Monday acknowledged that he may not have gotten enough votes to avoid a runoff.
The normally loquacious leader didn't take questions and appeared subdued as he met reporters for the first time since Sunday's contentious election, which was preceded by weeks of protests calling for the leader's departure.
