Search resumes for missing balloonists

The Italian coastguard is continuing to search for two Americans who went missing amid thunderstorms while competing in the world's oldest balloon race yesterday.

Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer Davis lost contact with their support team soon after 7am UK time as they flew over the Adriatic Sea.

The pair were taking part in the 54th annual Gordon Bennett gas balloon race, in which competitors attempt to fly as far as possible from Bristol. Read more about Search resumes for missing balloonists

Baader-Meinhof trial opens in Germany

Three decades after the Red Army Faction terrorised Germany with a campaign of murders, hijackings and bomb attacks, the last major trial involving one its members opens today, when prosecutors will seek to end the mystery of one the group's most prominent killings.

Verena Becker, one of the leading members of the RAF – also known as the Baader-Meinhof gang – is due to answer charges that she was involved in the murder of the country's leading public prosecutor, Siegfried Buback, 33 years ago. Read more about Baader-Meinhof trial opens in Germany

Lost and found: Australian reunited with abducted son

Sydney (dpa) - Fathers are the ones most likely to go missing, often driven underground by a perverse determination to avoid the child-support payments they could afford.

But in the celebrated case of Ken Thompson, the former Australian fire chief recently re-united with 6-year-old son Andrew in Amsterdam, the one on the run was wife and mother Melinda Thompson.

She abducted Andrew in 2008, flying with him from Sydney to Frankfurt and eventually setting up home in Holland with a new identity for herself and a fresh beginning for Andrew. Read more about Lost and found: Australian reunited with abducted son

99FM introduces Playhouse

On Saturday (2 October) one of the very first opportunities to enjoy the brand new 99FM Playhouse Theatre (the old Warehouse Theatre) presents itself when the station’s VIP listeners are given exclusive access to the pre-launch party. According to Laurika Williams of 99FM the main performance will be by Dantago also known as African Boy who performed at the Run N.A.M.S mix-tape launch party this past weekend. 99FM’s own Chi-Chi will be the MC on the night, while the ever-popular DJ Casey will be spinning the tunes. Short films coming

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the Namibia Film Commission (NFC) this week announced funding for four Namibian film projects.

Three short films will be produced from scripts selected from entries called for earlier this year totaling close to N$500 000. Another project, CamelThorns by GT Detering which is already a short film, has been supported with N$50 000 to develop it into a full-length feature according to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mbeuta Ua-Ndjarakana. Shekinah Cypher performed on Sunday at the Coca Cola stage at the Windhoek Show Grounds as part of the Gospel performance section of the extensive live entertainment programme that the Windhoek Show Society has put together for this year with Ongoma Events.
