NAB protects local growers

The Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB) has issued its cross-border import notice for August, prohibiting imports of five crops to protect local producers.

The restricted crops are butternut, cabbage, carrot, round tomato and onion.

NAB has allowed unrestricted imports of four crops where local supply cannot meet demand: gem squash, watermelon, sweet melon and sweetcorn.

To address production shortfalls, NAB has also authorised partial imports of other vegetables.

Imports of up to 50% of the required quantities of jam tomato, lettuce and potato will be permitted.

Imports of up to 30% of English cucumber, green pepper, pumpkin, beetroot and spinach will be allowed.

Imports of up to 20% of coloured pepper, sweet potato and cocktail tomato will be permitted.
